Why I Had to Call the Police on My Son’s Fiancée

From: Nancy

Subject: Am I wrong for locking my son’s fiancée in the kitchen?

Sure! Here’s a shorter version:

I made a huge mistake the other night. My son, James, brought his fiancée, Anna, over for dinner, and when I saw her, I froze. She looked exactly like a woman who had scammed my sister and me years ago. I was convinced it was the same person, so I asked Anna to help me in the kitchen and locked her in. I called the police, thinking I was protecting my son.

When the police ran her ID, it turned out I was wrong. Anna wasn’t the scammer, and now James is furious with me. He says they’re considering cutting me off unless I publicly apologize to Anna. I feel awful and don’t know how to fix this. Was I wrong to act the way I did? Have I ruined my relationship with them?
