My MIL’s Thanksgiving Rules Were So Insane, I Canceled the Whole Thing

I was excited to host Thanksgiving for the first time in our new home, but my MIL had other plans. She sent a list of strict rules:

approved dishes, no phones except for her, assigned seating with her at the head of the table, and no one leaving until she said so. A week before Thanksgiving, she showed up with her own groceries and a “holiday clipboard,” declaring she’d take over. When I refused, she insisted, “Thanksgiving is my holiday.” So, I canceled the dinner and booked a getaway with my husband. She retaliated by hosting her own Thanksgiving, excluding us.

Now, the family is divided—was I wrong to stand up for myself, or did I ruin the holiday?

Sincerely, Done Playing Nice.
