Steepest street in England where cars have to be parked sideways so they don’t roll away

Residents of England’s steepest street, Vale Street in Totterdown, Bristol, must park their cars sideways to keep them from rolling downhill. This 0.2 km road, with a 22-degree gradient and 17 m elevation gain, has made headlines for its extreme slope.

Despite the challenges, the street has a strong community vibe, hosting annual Easter egg-rolling contests. Cyclists and runners flock here for the ascent, and in 2021, a Banksy mural titled “Aachoo” appeared but was later removed. Winter sometimes brings added precautions as residents tie cars to lamp posts to prevent sliding, yet the location remains desirable with nearby Arnos Vale and local restaurants.
